Six Athletes To Represent Byron Center at State Swimming and Diving Championship
Six athletes from Byron Center will compete in the state Division II Boys Swimming & Diving Championships on March 8-9, at Eastern Michigan University.
They are: Michael Grover (freshman), Jacob Grover (senior), Owen Van Wyk (junior), Teagan Johnson (senior), and Jacob Koronkiewicz and Matthew Garbarino II (both sophomores).
“We hope to continue our streak of top-ten finishes, but it will be tough with our swimmers all competing against each other in the same two events,” said Coach Don Kimble. Jacob Grover, Teagan Johnson and Michael Grover will compete in both the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Breaststroke events.
During the OK Green Conference Swim & Dive meet – held at Byron Center’s pool on Feb. 22-23 – the trio placed first, second and third in the breaststroke; and first, fourth and seventh in the 200 IM. The three athletes were also named to the OK Green All-Conference Team.
Byron Center’s team will also compete in the 200 Individual Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay. And Owen Van Wyk will compete in diving.
The conference meet “was a great event for our program,” said Coach Kimble. “Many athletes from all the teams experienced best times and we saw many new state cuts.”
In addition to Byron Center, Zeeland, Holland Christian, Hamilton and Holland participated in the meet. “We would like to thank all the staff and parents that worked behind the scenes to make this a great event,” he said.
Meanwhile, it’s time to get back into the pool and prepare. “We hopefully will refocus and be prepared for the high level competition we will face at State,” concluded Coach Kimble.
